Kudos to my mom - Lunch Faces

When I was a kid, my mom used to do little things to entertain us. Sometimes they involved food. Since some of you have young children, you might find this entertaining as well.

I remember how I couldn't wait to do this with my own kids someday. Surely they would think I was as cool as I thought my mom was.

They didn't. Not even close. But here goes anyway.

Start with some lunch meat. We always had bologna (I seriously have to sing the Oscar Mayer song to be able to spell that correctly...b-o-l-o-g-n-a...). Now that I'm a grown up, I use turkey, because that's actually a real live animal. I've never seen a bologna running around...

Cut the lunch meat into quarters so it's easy for little fingers to pick it up. Now take a slice of cheese. Any kind will do. We always used Kraft. (There's another jingle... k-r...a-f...t).

From the slice of cheese, make parts of a face and place them on the lunch meat. See this nice smile? The trick is to use ALL the cheese but have enough to make cool stuff on the face...keep watching.

Look at that...How cute are those Spock ears? Now, I originally made those the eyes until I noticed I had not yet used all the cheese, so I went back and worked on the art a little and they ended up eyebrows. Brilliant.

When you're a professional meat & cheese face maker like myself, you can ration out the cheese enough to make a cute little hat with a flower sticking out...and maybe the top of a shirt.

If we hadn't yet eaten all the chips that week, sometimes she would use them for hair. It was always best when it was Fritos (no song for that) because they were curly and it looked more like my hair did when I was younger.

See how great my mom was? Thirty years later I still remember eating a bologna and cheese face (as we affectionately named it) off of a white paper plate for lunch. The first time I made this for my boys they both looked at me and said, "Mom, really, what is this?" Then they admitted it they thought it was stupid. I've never made it again...until today when those ungrateful, unappreciative, no-eye-for-art kids were at school and Kid Three was napping.

Kudos to my mom. She was awesome.

What are some unique things your mom did for you?

my mom did something similar...but she'd make 1/2 a regular sandwich and the quarters would be the eyes. Then maybe apple slices for the mouth, a strawberry or something for the nose, chips for the ears, etc.

I loved those lunch days!!

And ps...my kids didn't find it all that cool either when I did it for them. lol.

You're a good mom! Even if your kids roll their eyes, they'll probably remember your turkey/cheese (can't even bring myself to think about bologna) faces and want to make them for their kids.

Two things I remember my mom doing that were special--leaving notes in my lunchbox, and making us memorize scripture at breakfast. She'd make us little cards and we'd learn them over time. My sis and I can still recall a lot of them, probably because she taught them alphabetically...
A-As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Josh 24:15

B-Be ye kind, one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another.

C-Children, obey your parents in all things...

you get the picture.

Sometimes I would come home after school and my room would be spotless. I'm thinking it was because she couldn't take it anymore!

Well, you have BOYS! They never think (or show it) that their mom is cool. But I think your WAY cool!!

Keep making those lunchmeat faces....they may roll their eyes, but deep down, they think you're the BEST....I'm sure of it!

Come make ME lunch? ; )

My mom made me homemade mashed potatoes when I felt blue....also when I went through a really blue period in HS she read the 23rd Psalm with me every night so that I could sleep well....too bad we usually don't appreciate what they do for us until we have kids of our own.

Well, I LOVE that idea. I am so trying it with my girls. Maybe tonight. :)

I swear I love you!!! Fritos would totally make good curly hair!

The only unique thing my mom did for me was let me pay the bills. LOL Queen of the checkbook at 9. My grammy on the other hand always made me a beautiful Easter dress.

My mom would play hide and go seek in the dark with us sometimes. It was fun.

My mom made weenie boats. It was a hot dog sliced down the middle longways with a blob of instant mashed potatoes topped with melted Kraft single's cheese. Now that I am describing it, I wonder if my mom secretly hated me...

My mom always acted like the art I made when I was younger was the best "crap" she'd ever seen.

She did a lot of things for me when I was younger, but I think it means more to me that I'm 25 and she's still doing really cute stuff for me, such as:

1. She always, ALWAYS, send me a valentine's day package with lots of chocolate.
2. She gives me those little Cadbury eggs around Easter.
3. There's 2 Christmas trees I made during grade school; one is made of crepe paper, and the other is clay. Every (and I do mean EVERY) Christmas she always displays them--I think she's actually LIKES them, and I can't figure out why! lol

My mom is super talented and not only made all our birthday cakes (including an ice cream cake one year), but she also sewed all our prom dresses and Halloween costumes every year.

I agree with Robin--after the age of 3 or 4, it seems that little boys try to avoid being too mushy with their moms, which unfortunately also includes letting on that they think their mom is cool. But I'm sure they do. :)
