My Mom

My mom lives about 100 miles from me. Tuesday morning she rang my doorbell BEFORE 8am to spend the day with me to celebrate my birthday. I had the pancakes buttered and ready! She showed up with a fun present for me and this:

However, when the boys got home from school it looked like this... [I may have helped them with some of it. I'm old. I can't remember. I plead the 5th amendment...] I forgive them.

I loved that she took a day off work to drive at the crack of dawn to do whatever I wanted. No fussy plans. No expectations. Just spending time with me because I'm her baby. Her favorite baby. [That was just to get a rise out of my little sister. I love her.]

We kicked the boys to the bus stop said good bye to the big boys and quickly got busy on our day of unplanned fun. She helped me do a couple of little things around the house and then we headed out for a little Christmas shopping. Just an easy day with my favorite mentor.

Let me give you a dozen reasons my mom is the greatest chick ever...

1. She plays the accordion VERY well. Growing up I remember laying in bed at night, listening to her play hymns. My sister and I would yell out from the other room, "Play #157" and she'd strike up a little Victory in Jesus!

2. She is my FREE counselor when I need to be talked off the ledge.

3. She is the reason I experienced God at a young age. No one lived a more selfless, God honoring life in front of me growing up.

4. She can't tell a story without useless details and at this point, I don't want her to.

5. She chews 1/2 piece of gum at a time. I don't know why. Gum is cheap

6. She makes the best brisket in the history of red meat.

7. She believes "forever" is more than just a fairytale.

8. She is a servant to the bone. Need help with the kids? Mom will do it. Someone at church needs a meal? Mom will cook it. Run you to the airport? Mom will take you. What.ev.ah. you need.

9. When I was young she would sew dresses for me and my sister. [Why did we ALWAYS have to dress alike?!] Then she would sew little doll dresses for our "babies" so they would match us.

10. She hasn't quite mastered "leave a comment" on my blog but she sends me the sweetest notes when if I write something good.

11. She can rat hole money better than anyone I know. She's always got a few $20s tucked away for a special occasion.

12. She digs Jack Bauer. puleez. who doesn't?

What about your mom?
Give us a couple of fun facts!

I love that post. What a great mom you have.

My mom knows how to make the simplest things special. Chocolate milk is not drink, it is an EVENT. I have hundreds of special "unplanned nothing" memories.

I have done some not so admirable things in my life and she has loved me through it all!!! I am the woman I am today because of her and all the other moms God placed in my life (including Constance...is that her real name now?)

My mom is a pray-er. We ALL know who to call or e-mail when we're going through something!

I think we will just stick with your mom and not ruin a great blog.

How blessed you are to have such a great woman in your life. It brought tears to my eyes reading how much she loves you.

I am glad that you had a great birthday!! You so deserve it. Especially after making mine so wonderful. Love you Lady!!

That made me teary! So sweet. I have an awesome mom, too. And she used to sew me and my sister and our dolls the same dresses!!! Funny.

I hope Riley wants to hang out with my all day on her birthday when she's an adult. That would be the best.

Happy, happy birthday (mine is today!) My mom didn't come to my front door, but she did call this afternoon. she lives 4 hours away and doesn't travel when there is a possibility of snow...

but she has always come and visited after the birth each of my kids to help out and she always does my dishes and laundry when she visits!

My mom also "rat holes" money! I've never heard anyone use that term outside of my family!! How funny! My dad has started "rat holing" also. You should see the wads of money they pull out when they have something they want to do.

That is so sweet Kim...You have a great mom.
And so do I... One thing I am most grateful for is how my mom has always loved me just as I was... never put pressure on me to be a certain way, look a certain way, or do something she wanted me to do. I was ALWAYS accepted and ALWAYS felt loved by her. I want to pass that on to Caroline... it instills confidence and security in a child. And recently I have been grateful to the grandmother she is to Caroline... that little girl is loved (just as I was/am)!

I love that she took the day to spend with her mommy. I pray that I will do that for my children when they are older.

My mom looks for the good in EVERYONE.

My mom made clothes for me & my barbie dolls or my cabbage patch dolls. That was the best.

One of the things I loved most...she instilled the love of learning in me. I love all sorts of knowledge. I hated her method, but love the result.

Her method was reading the dictionary & encyclopedia before bed each night. Seriously.

What a nice tribute to your mom kim!
Words can't express the appreciation I have for my mother even though she passed away at a very early age (50 years old). I remember her love for my Dad. They had a wonderful relationship.......my dad just adored her!

She became one of my best friends particularly after I married. Reason being.....i finally grew up then!!
Now she's no longer with us.....but still loved in our memories! In part I am who I am today because of her! Thank you Lord for giving me such a great mom!

So many emotions - wiping away the tears! My mom always used to serve lunch/snacks using a paper towel as a placemat, and she would draw little hearts and write sweet little messages on the paper. Especially wonderful when home sick!
I tried this with my son. He sort of liked it, and sort of didn't understand. I guess it's a girl thing.
My mom sent me a card quite a few weeks ago, and I still have it up on my dresser. I cherish her sweet handwriting and, of course, little hearts.
Thanks for a sweet post. God bless!

What a great post. It is the everyday moments that make up the years, and what a great everyday-day to remember.

My Mom passed away a few years ago but just had to share a couple things that I remember...they are really random and might not make sense but here they are...

first, my Mom sent me cards for every holiday. EVERY holiday. Christmas, Easter, My birthday, New Year's, Valentine's, St. Patrick's day, yes, even Ground Hog Day. They were always funny and made me smile.

second, we had a birthcake war up until the time she moved back home. Each year for each other's birthday we would make a trick cake, in new and fun ways. The best year ever was when she iced and decorated the round cake pans to look just like the cake. Imagine my face when I tried to cut into it and I heard the ring of metal.

third, *this is the weird one you might not understand* My mom used to always sling her arm over the back of the seat to back the car up. I can always remember looking at her hand and watching the light reflect off her wedding ring. I think it's because of all those years looking at her hand from the back seat that one day after she had passed away I was putting my wedding rings on and started crying. My hubby asked what was wrong and I told him nothing. I had just realized I had my Mom's hands. It was such a physical connection to her after she had gone that it meant the world to me.
